Utility Shutoff & Energy Scams

As utility companies update rates and meters for fall, scammers are ramping up fake “immediate shutoff” threats. Using spoofed caller IDs, fraudulent texts, and fake billing portals, they claim your account is overdue or scheduled for disconnection, pressuring you to pay instantly or share personal details. The FBI reports utility fraud costs Americans billions annually, with complaint spikes during billing changes.

How Scammers Operate Fraudsters impersonate electric, gas, or water providers, sending counterfeit bills and warnings that your service is “flagged for nonpayment” or “set for shutoff.” Victims are urged to click malicious links, call fake support lines, or pay through risky methods like wire transfers, cryptocurrency, or gift cards. Scammers also try to collect sensitive information under the guise of verification.

Protect Yourself

  • Be wary of sudden calls, texts, or emails about utility disconnection.
  • Don’t click links or use contact info from unsolicited messages.
  • Never pay immediately to prevent shutoff.
  • Verify requests for personal info.
  • Contact your utility provider using the official number or website.
  • Check your account through secure portals.
  • Save suspicious communications.
