Scammers Love a Side Hustle (3/4/2026)

As gig work and freelance jobs grow across the District, so are the scams targeting independent workers. More than one-third of American consumers have been scammed while using gig economy platforms, a 21% increase from 2023 according to TransUnion.

Here’s how these schemes work: Fraudsters pose as clients, recruiters or platforms offering quick jobs or easy money. They may ask for upfront fees, personal information or banking details. Some even impersonate legitimate companies to gain trust, disappearing without paying you.

Red Flags to Watch For

  • Job offers that require payment to apply
  • Requests for personal or financial information
  • Fake checks or overpayment scams

Protect Yourself

  • Research platforms and clients before accepting work
  • Never pay to get a job
  • Use secure payment methods and written contracts
