Are you faced with roofing issues? Be cautious of unsolicited roofing inspectors and insurers’ usage of aerial imagery. Both can create problems when it comes to roof damage.
Roofing Contractors
After a roofing incident, you may be approached by roofing contractors soliciting roofing inspections or repairs. Be aware that contractor solicitations may be part of fraudulent schemes. Some contractors may falsely claim that normal wear and tear is due to storm damage, or even intentionally damage your roof to support a fake insurance claim.
Be especially wary if a contractor shows up uninvited offering to inspect your roof for damage. They may pressure you into filing a claim and ask you to assign your insurance proceeds to them, which may result in your repairs not being completed.
Be sure to check the DC Department of Licensing and Consumer Protection online database to verify a contractor’s license.
A licensed DC public adjuster can help handle your claim and represent you. You can check the license status of a public adjuster by contacting the DISB Licensing Bureau at 202.727.8000 or [email protected]
Aerial Imagery
Insurers use aerial imagery such as drones and satellites to assess roof conditions, roof damage, and whether a property is too risky to cover. Many consumer complaints have arisen regarding poor or obstructed aerial imagery leading to wrongful policy cancellations, nonrenewals or unjustifiable rate increases.
Additionally, there have been privacy concerns regarding drones or satellites taking pictures of the property. Homeowners have the right to see the pictures taken by drones and dispute problematic or discrepant pictures, cancelations, nonrenewals and premium increases.
