DOL Toll Scams on the Rise!

Since March 2024, the FBI has received more than 2,000 complaints about the U.S. Department of Licensing (DOL) toll scams. The DC Department of Insurance, Securities and Banking (DISB) urges residents to stay vigilant against these scams.

How the Scams Work
You receive a text claiming to be from the U.S. Department of Licensing or a toll authority, stating you have an outstanding toll violation. The message threatens penalties like suspension of driving privileges, prosecution, and fines if you don't pay. This scam, known as smishing, uses fake texts to trick you into sharing personal information or sending money.

Avoid DOL Toll Scams
  • Don't Click Links: Never click on links in unfamiliar texts. Visit the official website directly.
  • Verify Your Account: Check your account on the toll service’s legitimate website or call their customer service.
  • Delete the Text: Delete any suspicious texts immediately.
  • Secure Your Info: If you clicked a link and shared information, secure your financial accounts and dispute unfamiliar charges.

If you believe you’ve been a victim of a toll scam, contact the DISB Enforcement and Consumer Protection Division at 202.727.8000. You can also report to:
