Consumer Alert: Beware of Fake Debt Collectors

The District of Columbia Department of Insurance, Securities and Banking is warning District consumers to be on the alert for scam artists posing as debt collectors.

A consumer reported that she received emails from a company using the name Ace Cash Services for a debt she did not owe. The consumer claimed never to have made an online loan, and denied owing any monies to Ace Cash Services.

High pressure, coercive emails were sent to scare the consumer into paying. The scam artist threatened to have the consumer reported to a law enforcement agency and arrested in an attempt to collect on the fabricated loan debt.

DON’T BE FOOLED!  If you think that you have been contacted by a fake debt collector, ask the caller for his name, company, street address, and telephone number.  Do not provide any personal or financial information to a suspicious caller or respond to any correspondence. You should also immediately contact this department at (202) 727-8000 to report the matter.
