(Washington, DC) - The DC Department of Insurance, Securities and Banking (DISB) today issued a bulletin to inform licensed insurance providers of the enactment of a new law on marriage and domestic partnerships, which may impact insurance coverage eligibility. Mayor Adrian Fenty signed on July 6, 2009, a law recognizing same-sex marriages performed in other states or countries in the District of Columbia. In response to this law, the new bulletin states that insurance products covering the spouse of a primary insurance policyholder must also cover the same-sex spouse or same-sex domestic partner of the insured in the same manner. The mayor signed the “Jury and Marriage Amendment Act of 2009,” effective from July 6, and the “Domestic Partnership Judicial Determination of Parentage Amendment Act of 2009,” effective from July 20. The Bulletin 09-IB-01-07/02 will provide guidance to insurers on applying the new law. Any questions regarding the implementation of the new law, please contact Insurance Examination Manager Jamai Fontaine at (202) 442-7782 or by email at Jamai.email@example.com.
