April is Financial Literacy Awareness Month. The Department of Insurance, Securities and Banking, Bank on DC and the District’s Financial Literacy Council encourage residents to participate in free financial education events throughout the month. The department lists financial education events throughout April at this link on disb.dc.gov.
“Financial literacy is a priority for us,” said William P. White, commissioner of the Department of Insurance, Securities and Banking. “Preventing financial fraud is far more efficient when people can make informed financial decisions.”
Thirty percent of District households do not have savings accounts, according to a recent Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. survey. Two in five US adults gave themselves a C, D, or F on their knowledge of personal finance and more than half say they do not adhere to a household budget, according to Jump$tart, a leading nonprofit advocating financial education for students.
